Another Halloween is in the books and Pamela Wood, Park City Wine Club president, wants to invite local wine lovers to a pair of tastings before everyone’s schedule fills up with holiday parties and ski days.
The first is “Oh, Argentina,” a Flights and Bites event that is set to be held Wednesday at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse at Hotel Park City. The second is “Olive Oil, Vinegar, Chocolate and Wine… Oh, My!” Scheduled for Friday at Mountain Town Olive Oil Company on Main Street.
“Oh, Argentina” will pair Ruth’s Chris steaks with different malbecs and torrontes, the South American country’s respective signature red and white wines, Wood, a certified sommelier and wine educator, said. “These two types of wine, although from the same country, have many different styles, different tastes and different vintages and growing regions,” she said. The malbecs, specifically, are made to go with steaks, according to Wood.
“The steaks will be prepared three different ways, of which I haven’t been told,” she said. “So I think there will be a couple of surprises in store.”
Wood has worked with Ruth’s Chris since she founded the Park City Wine Club six years ago. She wanted to thank the restaurant’s past general manager Scott Stansfield, and current general manager Jason Teague, who has helped develop the event.”When Ruth’s Chris get a new wine, I put it into a Flights and Bites tasting to introduce it to the public,” Wood said.
The Flights and Bites concept started six years ago as Tapas and Tastes, a small event that offered pairings of wine and small savory dishes, Wood said. “I wanted to expand the event and make it bigger and a little more formal, so we changed it to Flights and Bites,” she said. “This way we can do a flight of a particular variety of wine.” Flights consist of between three to eight glasses of wine.”This way we can give participants a chance to taste the wines side by side, which helps them taste the different nuances,” Wood said.
Two days after Flights and Bites, the club will partner with Mountain Town Olive Oil and Ritual Chocolate for “Olive Oil, Vinegar, Chocolate and Wine… Oh, My!” This is an event that will help fundraising efforts during Live PC, Give PC, an annual day of giving to local nonprofits, Wood said.
“Mountain Town Olive Oil has a tasting room with a kitchen and everything where we can set things up,” she said. The cost is $50 and the proceeds will be donated to the nonprofit of each participant’s choice.
“We will have a list of nonprofits participating in Live PC, Give PC available so people can decide which organization they would want their money to benefit,” Wood said. “We’ll also have a computer on site where people can log on and donate directly to the nonprofits.” Mountain Town Olive Oil will also offer a 15 percent discount on select items during the event. “Olive Oil, Vinegar, Chocolate and Wine… Oh, My!” Is a way for the three businesses to give back to the community, according to Wood.
“When you’re a small local business like we are, we rely on community support,” she said. “So we are always thinking what we can do to show our thanks.”
Wood met Jessica McCleary, Mountain Town Olive Oil’s owner, at a wine event a few years ago.
“We always talked about doing something together, and when I saw that Live PC, Give PC was coming up, I thought that would be a fun event for us to support,” Wood said.
